Student Diversity Leadership Retreat (Two Day Event)

Date: Friday - February 11, 2011
Time: All Day
Location: University Prep, Seattle, WA

2011 Student Diversity Leadership Retreat

Independent Voices: Developing Young Leaders
For students grade 7-9 of all races, ethnicities and cultures

Support the development of young leaders in your school. The PNAIS Diversity Task Force has developed another amazing program for students to come together, connect, build both relationships and skills around communication and inclusiveness. This year’s conference will serve younger leaders, while more experienced student leaders will step in help facilitate sessions, under the guidance of Faculty.

 Themes to Be Addressed:

  • Bullying awareness, including cyber-bullying
  • Communication skills and development of language around diversity
  • Understanding of the power of language and meaning
  • Basic concepts on identity development, stereotypes, assumptions and more

The objectives of this conference are:

  • To ensure a continuity of student leadership by creating earlier exposure to diversity leadership training
  • To encourage dialogue between students of all races, ethnicities, and cultures
  • To explore the issues of diversity and inclusion in an age-appropriate context
  • To dialogue about how to create more inclusive school cultures and the forms exclusion takes in our schools
  • To facilitate the networking of students and shared learning experiences

Who Should Attend?

The retreat is open to seventh to ninth grade students of all races, ethnicities, and cultures, and we encourage all interested students to attend. Students must attend with a faculty member from their school.

Upper school students that have already taken on leadership roles within their school communities may work with faculty members to develop a workshop for the middle school students to attend. Faculty who have a group of students interested in developing a workshop should contact Emily McGrath directly for more information.

Chaperones

Schools are responsible for sending one school chaperone for every ten students attending. A chaperone must be an employee of the school that is sending the students. There is no registration fee for the first chaperone to attend from a school. If a school is sending additional chaperones, the registration fee is $55 per person.
